Walton-on-Thames is a town in Surrey, England. It lies on the River Thames, about 21 miles (34 km) southwest of London.
Walton-on-Thames was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Waletone”. The manor was held by William the Conqueror’s half-brother, Robert, Count of Mortain.
The name “Walton” is Anglo-Saxon in origin and means “settlement on the River Walbrook”, with “Walbrook” being a local stream that has since been covered over.
Walton-on-Thames was an ancient parish in the Elmbridge hundred of Surrey. The town of Walton-on-Thames appears to have grown up around the ford across the River Thames.
The parish church of St. Michael’s was founded in the 12th century and rebuilt in 1848.
There were two hospitals: one for lepers, founded in the early 13th century by Walter de Merton, Bishop of Rochester and Chancellor of England;
the other was a hospital for 13 poor men, founded in the late 15th century by William Spurgeon.
Walton-on-Thames Bridge was built in 1750, replacing an earlier ferry. Walton-on-Thames High Street is notable for its 18th-century buildings.
Walton-on-Thames is home to the River and Rowing Museum, which includes the Museum of Walton-on-Thames History.
