Get an Instant Quote >>Peterborough is a growing city in the heart of east England and has a population of around 200,000. It shares borders with Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, and Rutland.
Peterborough is a historic cathedral city in the East of England. It is located in the county of Cambridgeshire, about 75 miles (121 km) north of London. The population of the city at the 2011 census was 183,631.
The city is built on the River Nene which flows into the North Sea 30 miles (48 km) to the northeast. The railway station is an important stop on the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh.
The local topography is flat, and in some places below sea level, for example in parts of the Fens to the east of Peterborough.
Human settlement in the area began before the Bronze Age, as can be seen at Flag Fen east of the city, with evidence of Roman occupation also apparent in nearby Roman villas. The Anglo-Saxon period saw the establishment of a monastery, Medeshamstede, which later became Peterborough Cathedral.
The city’s origins are attributed to the abandonment of the Roman settlement of Durobrivae in AD 410 when the ice sheet covering most of northern Europe began to withdraw. The Anglo-Saxons formed a new, larger town across the River Nene, one of four known to have existed at that time, and named it Medeshamstede or “Meadow Settlement”.
Medeshamstede soon became one of the most important towns in the Midlands and prospered as a trading center. It is notable for its 12th-century abbey gateway and Tudor buildings. The town was also affected by the English Reformation, with the removal of images from the abbey leading to its closure in 1539. Peterborough became prosperous during the 17th century as a hub for the Eastern Great Road, which ran from London to Boston, and prospered as a staging post for coach traffic and trade.
