Bentley has a population of approximately 1,500 people. The town’s name is derived from the Old English beonet, meaning ‘bent grass’, and leah, meaning ‘clearing’.
Bentley was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a small village. In 1205, Bentley was granted a charter by King John to hold a weekly market and an annual fair. Bentley’s market charter was confirmed by Charles II in 1685. The town’s market is still held every Wednesday. Bentley’s annual fair is held on the first Saturday in September. Bentley became a civil parish in 1866.
Bentley was originally part of the hundred of Crondall, but became part of the hundred of Farnham in 1831. Bentley is governed by a parish council. The town has two schools: Bentley Church of England Primary School and Bentley Wood High School. Bentley has a number of historic buildings, including Bentley Manor (built in the 15th century), Bentley House (built in the 18th century), and Bentley Priory (built in the 19th century). Bentley is twinned with the town of Val-de-Reuil in France.
