Atherton is a town in Greater Manchester, England. It lies on the edge of the West Pennine Moors, at the southernmost end of the M61 motorway.
Atherton was first mentioned in historical records in 1246 as “Athirton”, meaning at the spring. The name may have derived from Anglo-Saxon æðre tun, meaning enclosure, homestead or farm at the spring.
In 1745, James Atherton built a mill on Alderley Brook at the bottom of Mill Street. The mill was powered by water from a nearby well and used to grind corn into flour. It continued to operate until the early 20th century when it was converted into a private dwelling.
Today, Atherton is a thriving town with a population of over 26,000. It is home to a number of businesses and amenities, including shops, schools, a library, a swimming pool and a leisure centre. There are also several parks and green spaces, including Alderley Park, which is popular with dog walkers and picnickers.
